I have major big news. Like HUGE news. (are you sensing my tone of false drama here? I hope so) Our dear Little H has done it. She pooped in the potty! I always knew in my heart that we would get to this milestone someday. But we were all a little surprised when she actually did it. She’s such a smart kid and she’s understood the concept for months. But she’s also a super stubborn kid and if she doesn’t want to do something – she ain’t doing it.
I’ve tried to just leave it be and not make a bit deal out of any of it. Most of the time she’s worn diapers around the house and has removed it on her own to go #1 in the potty as she felt like it. But she’s resisted going #2.
Every night before bed I read her The New Potty by Mercer Mayer – it’s been her favorite potty training book by far. She demands I read it to her.
And all that reading must have sunk in. She doesn’t want to be the baby in diapers any more she wants to be the big kid.
I’m thrilled. And how is this story supposed to inspire creativity? Well, it’s occurred to me that even when it felt like nothing was happening. Even when it felt like I was reading the same book over and over and over with no result. Something was happening. Every little bit helped. And bit by bit she was making up her mind, finding the courage and striving for the next level even if we were all unaware of it. So if you are feeling like you’re not making progress or like you’re stuck in a rut don’t fret. Just keep doing something no matter how slow going the journey might be because sooner or later you’ll get there and everything you do now is leading up to it.
What’s inspiring you this week? Share!

Congratulations! I poop closer to panties!
Very exciting moment for you all, I’m sure … but I need to warn you that you’re gonna have to stay on her … constantly … Good luck with future poops!
OMG That was supposed to read: ONE poop closer to panties! LMAO!!! The font makes it look like an “I” instead of a number.
HAHAHA thanks for the laugh this monday morning Genevieve!
I do remember this little thrill from when my son was young, and that was 20 something years ago. wow.
Charles It’s wonderful that you remember it! I hope I retain the memory as well, as gross as it is….
I should have commented before I read the comments ’cause now I can’t stop chuckling!
Yippee… for Little H and good luck to you. Even though it’s exciting don’t get disappointed if she pretends like she doesn’t know what you’re talking about the next time you want her to do poop in the potty. Especially since I’m sure you recognize the signs and she insists she doesn’t have to go. LOL… My little Anna did so well for so long and then she decides to pee pee in the bed, but other than that I am so happy not to have to buy diapers or Pull Ups any longer. (Sure hope she decides this is a dry week especially with the washing machine situation!)
It is gross, isn’t it? My oldest used to poop every time she got into the bathtub. I still remember it to this day and she’s 18. What a horror!
Have a good potty week!
Petula, I keep reading your comment over and over and over and each time I get to ‘What a horror!’ I bust a gut laughing. You’ve really kept me in stitches lately! Thanks so much for the laughs you’ve inspired
Go Little H! this post is incredibly encouraging… I feel as if I put one foot in front of the other with my book projects, just inching along and I would have never thought to use potty training as a metaphor. I’m remembering though how I was convinced I was going to have to send my daughter to kindergarten in a diaper
