Can anybody be given a great degree of creativity? No. They can be given the equipment to develop it-if they have it in them in the first place.
George Shearing
So tell me. Do you think some people are born more creative than others? Do you think creativity is something you either have or don’t have? I definitely agree with George when he says it can be developed. It’s partly why I continue writing this site. The demands of motherhood combined with the demands of being a wife and employee leave little time for developing my own sense of creativity. This is the big reason I write a weekly post on the subject. Focusing time each week on such thoughts helps me to keep the spirit of creativity alive and while it might not be enough to develop it, at least it won’t be withered and dead when I find myself with a few more hours to lend to working on creative endeavors.
Do you actively work at developing your creativity? I’m guessing that you do. What do you have on the go right now? Share your link in the widget below and show us!

I definitely think it’s important to at least think about being creative on a regular basis – and carve out a few minutes whenever you can to do something creative. As a mom, sometimes my creative time might be spent playing with play-do or stickers with my kid, but it still counts!

Yes, Play-Doh counts for a lot! I love coloring and drawing with little H. She loves telling me what to draw next
This is a very timely post for me. I have realized another part of my creativity that’s been packed up and dormant. Doing homework with my son has awakened it somewhat. I do believe we are born with certain gifts and an inbred creativity for it, but we must nurture it. Others who don’t have a gift for something can be taught the technical aspects – if you will – but I’m not sure it has the same fire or something. Great post and I love the quote.

yes, it’s the fire that I recognize as my sense of creativity. Sometimes, it’s maddening and i have to feed it air and let it rage. I don’t know that everyone has that burning. I guess some folks pour their hearts into other things besides tapping on a keyboard!
That’s a great question, and I haven’t a clue as to the answer-lol! I was raised in a creative family that praised and rewarded us for partaking in the fine arts (most especially opera and musical theater) and was urged (and supported) by my mother and maternal grandmother to attend the arts high school here in MN. I met my husband there and we are now in the process of nurturing our own little artists. So, the genes are definitely there, but so is the nurturing…For me, I realized several years ago that the only thing that seems to refill my cup for any length of time is using my creative brain, giving myself permission to put all of the “have to”s on hold and making the time to do something artistic. This last month, I’ve painted and recovered an antique chair that had belonged to my mother, and made an autumn wreath that I certainly could’ve bought already made for the same cost (but that wouldn’t have given me such a sense of satisfaction, would it have.) Boy, I’ve written a very long comment just to say, “Dunno.” Lol.

yes, giving ourselves permission is a big part of it. It’s hard to put something that seems like a luxury in a place of importance when we have a little person who wants our attention but if we don’t – who will we be once that little person is grown and gone?
I love re-purposing furniture. Would love to see a photo of your moms chair!
I definitely think that some people are naturally more creative than others. But I also think those people need to develop their skills and work at it too.

some people seem to not care that they aren’t developing those skills though. Some are content to focus on oh say, sports. It would be interesting to see someone who thinks they are ‘not creative’ try to hone their skills with an art form of some kind.
It’s weird. Like for me I can pretty much do anything artsy. I am also a Tattoo artist and can take off a year and not tattoo and come back into it better than I was before. You would think I would get better with doing more, but I think I get too bored and burnt out. Make sense?

taking time out to recharge is important and when you do something as intimate and intuitive as tattooing I can see how that would be important to do that. It makes total sense!
I worked very hard on a short video for my son’s birthday. I also like to scrapbook, but seem to find less & less time to myself away from this computer. My mom is SUPER creative with costumes & sewing. Her mom was the same…so it may be genetic after all.

I’m sure genetics is a part of it and wonder why some people in my family are quite artistic and then others don’t seem to be at all. It is hard to find time isn’t it?
Have you ever tried THE ARTIST’S WAY by Julia Cameron. I did it years ago and really enjoyed it. Don’t have time now though with kids, etc., like you said Heather. Blogging is a source of creative writing for me — so is cooking, and I love decorating my house — those are great creative outlets for me!
Thanks for coming by Sara. You know, I’ve heard so much about that book. I must pick it up sometime! I’ve been hesitant because I think there is a bit of a time commitment to get the most from it and I have ooooh zero time haha. I’m with you on decorating, in fact, we’re almost ready to redo my daughter’s room and I’m so excited! Now if only she would get on board
It’s true that creativity can be developed. We all have the capability to do tremendous thing, but most of us puts limitations on ourselves. One way to unleash our creativity is to believe in our self, by doing this we tap into the infinite resources deep in our consciousness.
Everything is created twice. First in the mind and second in reality. But most are stuck with the first.
“Everything is created twice. First in the mind and second in reality. But most are stuck with the first. ”
Wow, this statement sure has me thinking! What a reason to push yourself and see your thoughts come to reality…because what happens in your mind is never the same as what comes to fruition. Thanks so much for your comment!
